Auctioneer Designations

What do these initials mean?


Many auctioneers have a series of initials behind their names. Just like dietitians, nurses, lawyers, accountants and other professionals, auctioneers can gain certification in specialty areas by attending classes or seminars.

The National Auctioneers Association Education Institute (NAAEI) offers several of these classes. The most highly recognized designations are:


CAI - Certified Auctioneers Institute
Designed for decision makers in an auction firm. Classes are focused on the operation of the auction firm.


AARE - Accredited Auctioneer, Real Estate
Designed for auctioneers and real estate professionals involved in the marketing of real estate at auction


GPPA - Graduate, Personal Property Appraiser
Designed for auctioneers and appraisers of personal property


CES - Certified Estate Specialist
Designed for the auctioneer that handle sales of estates


BAS - Benefit Auctioneer Specialist

Designed to teach the planning techniques that create successful benefit auctions


GAA - Graduate Auction Administrator Certificate Program              

This program details the auction industry, the keys for business and personal success and the specific skills needed for the auction staff


AM - Auction Manager Certificate Program

Designed for Auctioneers and staff with less than five years experience in the auction industry
